Kana(M): Hey, Papa. Can I talk to you about something?
Xander: Of course, Kana. What is it?
Kana(M): It's Mama... I feel like she's always treating me like a child.
Xander: That's only natural. You are her son, after all. And you are still quite young.
Kana(M): I know, I know. I just mean I'm not as much of a child as I used to be. I want to help out with things. But whenever I try, she just tells me to go play with my friends instead.
Xander: I see. You want some responsibilities of your own.
Kana(M): Yeah! I want to show her she can rely on me. I wonder if there's something I could do for her...
Xander: Hmm. Let's see... Well, I try to spar with her as often as our duties permit.
Kana(M): And that makes her happy?
Xander: Yes. She's always happy to cross swords.
Kana(M): Oh.
Xander: Hm? What's wrong?
Kana(M): I don't know. I guess I don't feel like my sparring with Mama would help her very much...
Xander: Ah, I see.
Kana(M): Oh, I know! Let's have a contest, Papa!
Xander: A contest?
Kana(M): Yeah! We'll have a contest to see which of us can make Mama happier! Between the two of us, I'm sure we can come up with all sorts of things! Whoever Mama thanks the most wins!
Xander: Oh? You wish to challenge me? Very well, then. I accept.
Kana(M): Really? Yay!
Xander: But remember: I am your mother's husband. I know her better than anyone else. And I do not intend to go easy on you. Besting me will be no easy feat.
Kana(M): That's fine by me, Papa. I'm gonna beat you fair and square!
Xander: Heh. Then may the best man win!

Kana(M): Hey, Papa! I've been making so much progress in our contest! How about you?
Xander: Well, I haven't done anything too special yet, but she has thanked me many times. Let's see—I've got my tally right here.
Kana(M): WOW! That's so many!
Xander: Yes. I am as surprised as you are. I suppose I do more for your mother than I thought. It's a nice feeling. Perhaps I'm a passable husband after all.
Kana(M): Hmph... Well, I'm still not going to lose! Here, see! I've been tallying mine too! And the total is...um...
Xander: That would be...the same number as I.
Kana(M): It is? It is! Haha! I'm gonna beat you after all, Papa! I don't have to work like you, so I've been spending all day doing things for her!
Xander: So that's your secret. And what, precisely, have you done?
Kana(M): Mostly I've been trying to help out around camp! I spend each morning making arrows for the archers. Then, at lunch, I slice the bear meat and hand out food to the soldiers. Oh, and at night I make sure the mounts are all fed and outfitted for the next day. Plus I do a bunch of other little things whenever I have the time!
Xander: That's an enormous amount of work for someone your age. I'm impressed. You really have been growing up, haven't you?
Kana(M): Huh?
Xander: Oh, just a thought. It wasn't so long ago you were still in your swaddling clothes. Now, all of a sudden, you're making real, important contributions to the army. Maybe I've been treating you like too much of a child as well.
Kana(M): Heehee. Yeah, I've been working real hard. Soon there'll be nothing I can't do!
Xander: I believe it. And I bet your mother is very proud of you.
Kana(M): I hope so! And I'm gonna make her even prouder tomorrow!
Xander: You're turning out to be a worthy adversary, little Kana. I cannot afford to be careless, or you may just secure the win.

Kana(M): *grumble*
Xander: Hello, Kana.
Kana(M): Hi, Papa...
Xander: What's the matter? I expected you to still be exulting after your little victory the other day. Or has besting your old man in a contest already lost its charm?
Kana(M): Oh, no. I'm still happy about that, I guess. It's just that I was trying to do things for Mama earlier, and she made me stop. She said I should be spending more time playing around with my friends again. She still thinks I'm just a kid. Haven't I shown her I'm old enough to handle helping out around camp?
Xander: So that's it. I wouldn't worry. It's not you. You're doing good work, I promise.
Kana(M): Then why doesn't she want me to help with anything?
Xander: I think your mother knows full well that you're capable of handling these things. But seeing you acting so grown up makes her feel sad.
Kana(M): Huh? Why?
Xander: Well, she doesn't want to lose her baby boy. She is very, very proud that you're growing up and working so hard. But at the same time, she's worried it means you won't need her anymore. It's a little silly, but it's true. Parents can be funny like that.
Kana(M): So...what should I do?
Xander: I'd say to keep helping out around camp, but don't work yourself so hard. Take frequent breaks to see your friends, play games, and go on adventures. And try to spend some quality time with your mother every now and then. Think you can handle that?
Kana(M): But...
Xander: What? Do you not want to spend time with your mother?
Kana(M): No, that's not it! It's just... I feel like that stuff is for babies.
Xander: No, Kana, it's not for babies. It's for children. And your mother wants you to stay a child for as long as you can. We both do.
Kana(M): Papa...
Xander: Kana, we know that you're growing and that you want more responsibilities. And we know that you're going to be a fine young man someday. But for now...relax. Don't try to grow up so quickly. After all, you have the rest of your life to be a responsible adult.
Kana(M): OK. Thanks, Papa. I'll think real hard about everything you said.
Xander: I trust you will. You know... I think it would be good if you spent the night in with your mother. I'll go talk to her about it.
Kana(M): Wait! What about you?
Xander: What? Me? No, I have to train and—
Kana(M): But, Papa! I thought you wanted me to enjoy my childhood. It wouldn't be much of a childhood without a papa...
Xander: Well, when you put it that way... As you wish, Kana. Go tell your mother.
Kana(M): Yaaay!
Xander: A future king who can't even refuse a request from his own son. *sigh* But...I suppose a good king must always be at the service of his subjects. Especially when their face lights up at the thought of a night in with Papa...
