Kana(M): Hey, Papa? There's something I wanted to ask you about, if that's OK...

Saizo: Hm? What is it?

Kana(M): Well, see, it's Mama. She's always treating me like a child.

Saizo: Of course she is. You are her son. It is only natural.

Kana(M): I know, I know. I just mean I'm not as much of a child as I used to be. I want to help out more. But whenever I try, she just tells me to go play with my friends instead.

Saizo: I see. You want some responsibilities.

Kana(M): Right! I want to be someone she can rely on. Do you have any ideas for things I could do for her?

Saizo: Hm... Well, she does seem quite pleased with the magical whistle I gave her. When it is blown, it emits a sound that only I can hear. It was developed as a bodyguarding tool for the royal family, but never used. I thought it fitting to give her when we were wed.

Kana(M): And...that whistle makes her happy?

Saizo: Yes. When she blows on it, I appear by her side immediately. She has said it has been very useful when she required assistance on the battlefield. ...Or when she had something heavy to be carried. ...Or when she wanted sugar for her tea. The point is she enjoys the gift.

Kana(M): Oh...

Saizo: Is something wrong?

Kana(M): I guess I was just looking for things that I could also do to make her happy...

Saizo: I see. Hm.

Kana(M): I know! Let's have a contest, Papa!

Saizo: A contest?

Kana(M): Yeah! We'll have a contest to see which of us can make Mama happier! Between the two of us, I'm sure we can come up with all sorts of things. Whoever gets thanked the most wins!

Saizo: A competition between father and son, eh? Very well. I accept your challenge.

Kana(M): Really? Yay!

Saizo: But let me warn you. I AM Avatar's husband. I know her better than anyone. And I do not intend to lose.

Kana(M): That's fine with me, Papa. I'm gonna beat you fair and square!

Saizo: Hmph. Then let the games begin.

Kana(M): Hey, Papa! I've been making a ton of progress on our contest! How about you?

Saizo: I have not yet performed any special tasks, but I believe I am doing well. Let me see. I have a tally here...

Kana(M): WOW! That's a lot! You got all of these already?

Saizo: Yes. It was more than I expected as well. But I suppose it is not so surprising, as I only rarely leave your mother's side.

Kana(M): Well, I'm still not gonna lose! Here, see! I recorded all mine, too. And the total is...um...

Saizo: Wh-what?! You have just as many as I do!

Kana(M): I do? I do! Haha! Kana's gonna beat you big-time! After all, I don't have to work, so I can spend all day doing things for Mama!

Saizo: Hmph... Impudent little brat. And what exactly is it that you've been spending all day doing?

Kana(M): Mostly I've been trying to help out around camp. I spend each morning making arrows for the fletchers. Then at lunch I chop the vegetables for the cooks and hand out the food. Oh! And at night, I make sure the mounts are all fed and outfitted for the next day. Plus I do a bunch of other little things whenever I have time!

Saizo: That's a lot of work. And you've been doing this every day? You really have grown up, haven't you?

Kana(M): Huh?

Saizo: Just a thought... Perhaps I've been treating you like too much of a child as well. It wasn't that long ago that you were just a little crying pink lump. And now, suddenly, you're making real, important contributions to the army.

Kana(M): Heehee. Yeah, I've been working real hard. Soon there'll be nothing I can't do!

Saizo: I believe it. And I bet Avatar is very grateful for all the good work you've been doing.

Kana(M): "Good work"... Hm. I just realized...Mama hasn't really been saying "thank you" to me very much. She just tells me "good work" and smiles. It's kind of a sad smile, come to think of it...

Saizo: I wouldn't overthink it. I'm sure she very much appreciates your work.

Kana(M): OK, Papa. If you say so... But don't think this means I'm going to let you win!

Saizo: Heh. And I still do not intend to let you win either!

Kana(M): *grumble*

Saizo: Kana. What is it?

Kana(M): Hi, Papa...

Saizo: Why are you sulking? I would have expected you to be exulting over your little victory the other day. Have you tired of besting your old man already?

Kana(M): Oh, no, Papa. I'm still happy about that, I guess. It's just that I was trying to do things for Mama earlier, but she made me stop. She said I should be spending more time playing around with my friends. She still thinks I'm just a kid. Haven't I shown her I can help out with stuff too? Am I messing up? Is she just pretending I'm doing a good job?

Saizo: Oh, is that it? Relax. I'm sure it isn't anything you've done.

Kana(M): Then why doesn't she want me to help with anything?

Saizo: I think Avatar knows full well you're capable of taking responsibilities. But it makes her worry. And it makes her feel lonely.

Kana(M): Huh? Why?

Saizo: She doesn't want you to miss out on your childhood. And she doesn't want to lose her little boy. She's happy to see you growing up, but she's worried you won't need her anymore.

Kana(M): But...I'm just trying to pull my own weight. I don't get why that would be a bad thing.

Saizo: And I'm not sure I can quite tell you why. But I do have a suggestion for you. Keep helping your mother like you have been, but don't work yourself quite as hard. Take breaks to see your friends and play games. And it wouldn't hurt to try and spend some quality time with her now and then. Think you can handle that?

Kana(M): But...

Saizo: Hm? Is the idea of spending time with your mother so terrible?

Kana(M): No, that's not it! It's just...I feel like that stuff is for babies.

Saizo: No, Kana. It's not for babies. It's for children. And your mother wants you to be a child for just a little while longer. We both do.

Kana(M): Papa...

Saizo: We know that you're growing up and that you want to be relied upon. You're going to be a great man someday. We all know it. But for now...relax. Enjoy yourself. At least a little bit.

Kana(M): OK... Thanks, Papa! I'll think real hard about everything you've said.

Saizo: Good. You know... I think it would be good if you spent some quality time with your mother tonight. Have a nice night in, just the two of you.

Kana(M): W-wait! Aren't you gonna stay with us?

Saizo: What? No, I've got to wor—

Kana(M): But, Papa! Don't you need to take a break sometimes too? I thought you wanted me and Mama to be happy!

Saizo: ... F-fine. Go tell your mother.

Kana(M): Yaaay!

Saizo: A night in with the family, eh? I must be getting old. But...it's not the worst feeling in the world. Heh.
