Kana(M): Hey, Papa? There's something I wanted to ask you about.

Kaze: Of course, Kana. What do you need?

Kana(M): It's Mama. She's always treating me like a child.

Kaze: Well, that's only natural. You're her son, after all. And you ARE still quite young.

Kana(M): I know, I know! I just mean I'm not as much of a child as I used to be. I want to help out with things. But whenever I try, she just tells me to go play with my friends instead.

Kaze: I see. You want some responsibilities of your own.

Kana(M): Right! I want to show her that she can rely on me. Can you think of any special things that I could do for her?

Kaze: Hm. Well, I often give her ointments or scented oils I craft myself. It turns out that a knowledge of medicinal herbs can take you quite far in such things.

Kana(M): Oh...

Kaze: Hm? What's wrong?

Kana(M): I guess I was just hoping for things that I could do for her too... I don't know how to make all that stuff like you, Papa.

Kaze: Ah. Yes. I see how that would present a problem for you.

Kana(M): Oh, I know! Let's have a contest, Papa!

Kaze: A contest?

Kana(M): Yeah! We'll have a contest to see which of us can make Mama happier! Between the two of us, I'm sure we can come up with all sorts of things! Whoever Mama thanks the most wins!

Kaze: A father-son competition, eh? Sounds interesting. Very well, then.

Kana(M): Really? Yay!

Kaze: But you should remember, I am the one who won your mother's heart. Beating me will be no mean feat. I do not intend to go easy on you.

Kana(M): That's OK with me, Papa. I'm gonna beat you fair and square!

Kaze: Then let the games begin!

Kana(M): Hey, Papa! I've been making a ton of progress on our contest! How about you?

Kaze: Well, I haven't done anything too special, but I've gotten quite a few thanks. I've got a tally right here. Take a look!

Kana(M): WOW! That's a lot! You got all of these already?

Kaze: Yes. It surprised even me, to tell you the truth. I guess I do more for your mother than I'd thought.

Kana(M): Hmph. Well, I'm still not gonna lose! Here, see! I recorded all mine too! And the total is...um...

Kaze: Hm... It seems we have the same score.

Kana(M): We do? We do! Haha! Kana's gonna beat you big-time, Papa! After all, I don't have to work, so I can spend all day doing things for Mama!

Kaze: I didn't think about that. You're right. You probably will beat me at that rate. By the way, what all have you been doing for her?

Kana(M): Mostly I've been trying to help out around camp. I spend each morning making arrows for the fletchers. Then at lunch I chop the bear meat for the cooks and hand out the food. Oh, and at night I make sure the mounts are all fed and outfitted for the next day. Plus I do a bunch of other little things whenever I have time!

Kaze: That's quite a lot of work. I'm impressed. You really have been growing up, haven't you?

Kana(M): Huh?

Kaze: Oh, just a thought. It wasn't so long ago you were still in swaddling clothes. Now, all of a sudden, you're making real, important contributions to the army.

Kana(M): Heehee. Yeah, I've been working real hard. Soon there'll be nothing I can't do!

Kaze: I believe it. And I bet your mother is very proud of you for all your hard work.

Kana(M): I hope so! And I'm gonna work even harder for her tomorrow! I won't let this end in a draw, Papa!

Kaze: And neither will I. May the best man win!

Kana(M): *grumble*

Kaze: Hey, Kana?

Kana(M): Hi, Papa...

Kaze: What's the matter? I'd have expected you to still be exulting over your little victory the other day. Or has besting your old man already lost its novelty?

Kana(M): Oh, no. I'm still happy about that, I guess. It's just that I was trying to do things for Mama earlier, and she made me stop. She said I should be spending more time playing around with my friends. She still thinks I'm just a kid. Haven't I shown her I can handle this stuff?

Kaze: Ah, I see. I wouldn't worry. It's not you. You're doing good work, I promise.

Kana(M): Then why doesn't she want me to help with anything?

Kaze: I think your mother knows full well you're capable of handling these things. But seeing you acting so grown up makes her feel sad.

Kana(M): Huh? Why?

Kaze: She doesn't want to lose her baby boy. She's happy you're growing up, but she's worried you won't need her anymore. It's a bit contradictory, I know. Parents can be funny like that.

Kana(M): So then what am I supposed to do?

Kaze: I'd say to keep helping out around camp, but don't work yourself quite so hard. Take breaks to see your friends, play games, go on adventures. You know. And also try to spend some quality time with your mother every now and then. Think you can handle that?

Kana(M): But...

Kaze: Hm? Do you not want to spend time with your mother?

Kana(M): No, that's not it! It's just...I feel like that stuff is for babies.

Kaze: No, Kana. It's not for babies. It's for children. And your mother wants you to stay a child for just a little while longer. We both do.

Kana(M): Papa...

Kaze: Kana, we know that you're growing and that you want more responsibilities. And you're going to be a fine young man someday. Everyone knows it. But for now...relax. Enjoy yourself. At least a little bit, here and there.

Kana(M): OK. Thanks, Papa. I'll think real hard about everything you've said.

Kaze: Good! You know... I think it would be good if you spent the night in with your mother. I'll go talk to her about it now.

Kana(M): Wait! What about you?

Kaze: Me? No, I've got too much wor—

Kana(M): But, Papa! Don't you need a break sometimes too? I thought you wanted me and Mama to be happy!

Kaze: ...Very well, then. I suppose I have no choice when you put it like that.

Kana(M): Yaaay!

Kaze: A night in with the family, huh? You know, I think I could get used this...
