Nina: Mmm...that was really something. The way those men were chatting like old friends... What could they have been talking about? The mind wanders...

Beruka: You're home, I see.

Nina: Gah! Mother?! What are you doing here? I thought you were training! You didn't hear me talking about...stuff... Did you?

Beruka: Were you talking to yourself? That's weird, Nina. What were you saying?

Nina: Nothing! Don't worry about it! Whew...

Beruka: OK. Oh, I cleaned your room.

Nina: Mother! That's my private space.

Beruka: The books you were trying to hide are all on your desk now.

Nina: Oh my gods, oh my gods, oh my gods... PLEASE tell me you didn't open any of those books...

Beruka: Which books do you mean?

Nina: My diaries and journals, Mother! Did you read them or didn't you?

Beruka: I didn't. Besides, it wouldn't matter to me what they said even if I did.

Nina: What's that supposed to mean? It sounds like you DID read them! Well? Did you or didn't you? ARRRRGH!

Nina: *sigh* Why does it have to be so difficult...

Beruka: Something wrong, Nina?

Nina: Oh...hi, Mother. I...I dunno.

Beruka: It seems like something's wrong. Do you want to go into detail?

Nina: Well, I suppose things can't get any worse... I...I have a hard time talking to guys. But I think about them all the time! I feel like such a freak. Like they know that I'm thinking about them... And I just clam up and turn red. It's so awful!

Beruka: If it's hard for you, you don't have to force yourself to do it. Just ignore them.

Nina: Ugh, you don't understand! When I finally manage to stammer a few words out... I start acting super mean and creepy for no reason! I need to change. But I don't know how...

Beruka: I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm not there yet myself. All I know is we can't give up. It's hard, and we don't know where to start, but... We have to keep trying things if we want one of them to stick someday.

Nina: You really think so?

Beruka: I have to believe it's true. It's not hopeless. Not for either of us.

Nina: Thanks, Mother. I actually feel a little bit better.

Beruka: Good. Be sure to write all this down in your diary. It's better than the rest of what's in there.

Nina: Wait, so you DID read them? AGHHH! I'm going to DIEEEEEE!

Nina: Hey, Mother. Guess what? I talked to a guy today, and it wasn't weird at all!

Beruka: Interesting. What happened?

Nina: Well, it was pretty basic as far as talking goes. I just gave him directions. But I didn't say anything weird or run away randomly!

Beruka: Well done.

Nina: Right? I've been giggling about it all afternoon.

Beruka: Maybe there's hope for us both after all. Once you ditch your hobby, anyway.

Nina: I thought we agreed to never speak of...my hobbies...ever again!

Beruka: Sorry. I know that's a sore spot. I was impressed at your methods, though. You've trained yourself to be a good agent.

Nina: How many of my diaries did you read, Mother? Jeez!

Beruka: All of them. I made sure Avatar saw them as well.

Nina: WHAT?! Why would you do that? WHY?

Beruka: I told you: you're a good agent. You came up with espionage tricks not even I knew. The whole army will benefit from the tricks you developed to spy on people.

Nina: Great. Now everyone knows what a huge freak I am. Thanks, Mother.

Beruka: If anyone calls you a freak, just point me at them. They won't say it twice. I love you, and that's all that matters.
