Shigure. You're painting again, I see.
+
Hey, Papa. Can I talk to you about something?

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
Hello, Father. Sorry, I didn't hear you come in.  I know this is no time for artwork, since we're at war and all.
+
Sure, Kana. What is it?

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Don't get the wrong impression. I'm not here to scold you. You have a true gift. In another time, perhaps you would have been a great artist.  I know it's difficult to be true to yourself during wartime.  But I honestly think you should continue to paint without restraint.
+
It's Mama... I feel like she's always treating me like a child.

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
That's kind of you to say. But I really don't think I have much of a future as an artist.
+
Well, that's only natural. You're her son, after all. And you ARE still quite young.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Your innate modesty is a tremendous virtue. It keeps one's pride in check. But I truly believe that it would be a shame not to show off your work. There must be a way to share it with the world.
+
I know, I know. I just mean I'm not as much of a child as I used to be. I want to help out with things. But whenever I try, she just tells me to go play with my friends instead.

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
What do you mean?
+
Ah, I see. You want some responsibilities of your own.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Let me think... I know just what to do. How about we throw you a solo exhibition?
+
Yeah! I want to show her she can rely on me. I wonder if there's anything I could do for her...

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
A-an exhibition? I could never do that.  Besides, our troops are on the advance.  The setup alone would be way more work than it's worth.
+
Let me think... In my case, I try to help her with her training, whenever we have the chance.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
It doesn't have to be a royal gala.  We just have to reserve a tent and invite nearby soldiers and villagers.
+
And that makes her happy?

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
B-but it seems so vain to reserve a whole tent just for my personal use.
+
Yeah, we both enjoy breaking a sweat together.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Shigure, this isn't about vanity. I'm not looking to boast about your talent. In trying times, it's important to find some peace of mind. An exhibition would be a welcome reprieve from the exhaustion of war.
+
Oh...

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
I'm not sure...
+
Eh? You seem unsatisfied.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
I'm not trying to force your hand. What do you want to do, Son?
+
Yeah...I don't think I could really help Mama with her training very much. And besides, that's a special Papa-Mama thing. I don't want to be a copycat. Oh, I know! Let's make it a contest, Papa!

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
OK, fine...  We can give it a shot. But I have to admit that it makes me a bit anxious.
+
A contest? What kind of contest?

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Don't be! I know this show will be the event of the season.  I'll start recruiting volunteers in town. We should start our preparations right away.
+
Yeah! We'll have a contest to see which of us can make Mama happier! Between the two of us, I'm sure we can come up with all sorts of things! Whoever Mama thanks the most wins!

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
Thank you, Father.
+
A little father-son competition, hm? Interesting. Very well, then. I accept your challenge.

'''Ryoma''':
Hello, Father...
+
But remember: I am your mother's husband. I know her better than anyone else. And I don't intend to go easy on you. Besting me will be no mean feat.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Oh, Shigure. Is something on your mind?
+
That's fine by me, Papa. I'm gonna beat you fair and square!

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
Well... You've done so much to make this exhibition a possibility.  I just wanted to say thanks.
+
Heh. Then may the best man win!

'''Ryoma''':

To be honest, I didn't think everything would come together so quickly.  It's all thanks to the villagers. Their help was invaluable.  They're all excited to see your paintings.  Your reputation as a gifted artist precedes you.

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
O-oh, I don't know about that...
+
Hey, Papa! I've been making a ton of progress on our contest! How about you?

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
Are you nervous, Shigure?
+
Well, I haven't done anything too special yet, but she's thanked me many times. Let's see... I've got a tally right here.

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Of course. But mostly I'm concerned about my newest painting.  It's just not coming together like I hoped it would.
+
WOW! That's so many! And you got all these already?

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
Is this the painting you're doing just for the exhibition?  While I would love to see a new piece, time is running short.  If the work isn't going well, perhaps you should finish it after the show.
+
I was as surprised as you are. I guess I do more for your mother than I thought.

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
I promised myself that I would get it done. So many people have come together to give me this opportunity. And the final piece really unites the show. I have to keep going.
+
Hmph... Well, I'm still not going to lose! Here, see! I recorded all mine too! And the total is...um...

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
Very well.  But please, don't push yourself too hard.  If you end up making yourself sick, all this work will have been pointless.
+
Ghhk! You have the same number as me!

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Don't worry, Father. I'll be careful.  If you'll excuse me, I should get back to my painting.
+
I do? I do! Haha! Kana's gonna beat you big-time, Papa! I don't have to work like you, so I've been spending all day doing things for her!

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
All right. Good luck.  The boy seems so passionate. I wonder what's gotten him all worked up...
+
So that was your secret. And what kind of things have you been doing for her?

Mostly I've been trying to help out around camp! I spend each morning making arrows for the fletchers. Then, at lunch, I slice the bear meat and hand out food to the soldiers. Oh, and at night I make sure the mounts are all fed and outfitted for the next day. Plus I do a bunch of other little things whenever I have the time!

'''Ryoma''':

'''Ryoma''':
It's finally time for Shigure's exhibition. I should take a peek inside the tent...  Incredible...  The turnout is quite impressive. People have come from miles around.  From what I've overheard, it sounds like everyone loves his artwork.  This event is a smash success.  Hmm, that's strange. I haven't seen Shigure anywhere.  Where could he be?
+
Wow. That's quite a lot of work for someone your age. I'm impressed. You really have been growing up, haven't you?

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
<nowiki>*pant*...*pant*</nowiki>...
+
Huh?

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
S-Son, what's wrong? Are you just now getting here?  How could you be late to your own exhibition?!
+
Oh, just a thought. It wasn't so long ago you were still in swaddling clothes. Now, all of a sudden, you're making real, important contributions to the army. Maybe I've been treating you like too much of a child as well.

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Sorry about that, Father. I've been up all night working on my painting.
+
Heehee. Yeah, I've been working real hard. Soon there'll be nothing I can't do!

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
What?!
+
I believe it. And I bet your mother has been very proud of all your hard work.

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
It's OK, I'm here now.
+
I hope so! And I'm gonna make her even prouder tomorrow!

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
Don't you remember when I told you not to push yourself too hard?  There are already plenty of pieces on display here. What does one last painting really bring to the show?
+
Hrm...I may have to start taking this competition a bit more seriously. You're turning out to be quite the worthy opponent.

'''Shigure''':

You don't understand.  I promised myself that I would complete it, no matter what.  I made this because I'm thankful for everything you've done for me, Father.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Wait, what?!  Th-this is...your mother and myself?
+
<nowiki>*grumble*</nowiki>

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
Yes, it's a portrait of you two.
+
Hello, Kana.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
So this is what you've been working on so tirelessly?
+
Hi, Papa...

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
Indeed, Father. My love for you and Mother cannot be measured.  You brought me into this world. Without you, I never would have been able to paint.  So I wanted to put all those feelings into this portrait.
+
What's the matter? I expected you to still be exulting after your little victory the other day. Or has besting your father already lost its charm?

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Shigure..I have to admit that you really got me. I had no idea what you were up to
+
Oh, no. I'm still happy about that, I guess. It's just that I was trying to do things for Mama again earlier, and she made me stop. She said I should be spending more time playing around with my friends again. She still thinks I'm just a kid. Haven't I shown her I'm old enough to help out around camp?

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
F-Father, it hurts when you hug me so tightly... Hahaha.
+
I see, so that's it. I wouldn't worry. It's not you. You're doing good work, I promise.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
You make me very proud, Son.
+
Then why doesn't she want me to help with anything?

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
I feel the same way.
+
I think your mother knows full well you're capable of handling these things. But seeing you acting so grown up makes her feel sad.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
Is that right? There's no time to talk. We've got to put this painting on display!
+
Huh? Why?

'''Shigure''':
+
'''Ryoma''':
O-OK. It's a little embarrassing though...
+
Well, she doesn't want to lose her baby boy. She's very, very proud that you're growing up and working so hard. But at the same time, she's worried it means you won't need her anymore. It's a little silly, but it's true. Parents can be funny like that.

'''Ryoma''':
+
'''Kana(M)''':
No, it's not. This piece is simply magnificent. It's clearly the finest work in the exhibition. So obviously, it must go on display, right?  Do you mind, Shigure?
+
So...what should I do?
 +

 +
'''Ryoma''':
 +
I'd say to keep helping out around camp, but don't work yourself so hard. Take breaks to see your friends, play games, go on adventures. You know. And try to spend some quality time with your mother every now and then. Think you can handle that?
 +

 +
'''Kana(M)''':
 +
But...
 +

 +
'''Ryoma''':
 +
What's wrong? Do you not want to spend time with your mother?
 +

 +
'''Kana(M)''':
 +
No, that's not it! It's just...I feel like that stuff is for babies.
 +

 +
'''Ryoma''':
 +
No, Kana, it's not for babies. It's for children. And your mother wants you to stay a child for just a little while longer. We both do.

'''Kana(M)''':

Papa...
 +

 +
'''Ryoma''':

Kana, we know that you're growing and that you want more responsibilities. And we know that you're going to be a fine young man someday. But for now...relax. Don't try to grow up so quickly.
 +

 +
'''Kana(M)''':
 +
OK. Thanks, Papa. I'll think real hard about everything you said.
 +

 +
'''Ryoma''':

Good. You know... I think it would be good if you spent the night in with your mother. I will go talk to her about it.

Wait! What about you?

'''Ryoma''':

'''Kana(M)''':

'''Ryoma''':
 +
Wh-when you put it like that... All right, all right, fine. Now, go tell your mother.
