Takumi: Ah, Shigure... Are you painting again?

Shigure: Hello, Father. Yes, I'm sorry. I know this is no time for artwork. We are at war, after all.

Takumi: Son, don't worry about it. I didn't come here to criticize you. Honestly, it's a little sad. In another time or place, you might have become a world-famous artist.

Shigure: That's very kind of you to say.

Takumi: Where is your ambition? It's obvious that these paintings deserve to be seen. There must be a way to show off all of your artwork.

Shigure: Father, what do you mean?

Takumi: Wait... Yes, I have an idea! Why don't we hold a solo exhibition for you?

Shigure: A-an exhibition? I could never do that. With our troops already on the advance, the timing would never work. The setup alone would be a massive hassle.

Takumi: It doesn't have to be some grandiose affair. We can reserve a tent and announce it to the soldiers and nearby villagers.

Shigure: But it seems so vain to rent a whole tent just for personal use...

Takumi: Shigure, now more than ever, we need a reprieve from suffering. Art has the power to heal emotional wounds and bring joy to our lives. Have more confidence in yourself. The work you do is more important than you think.

Shigure: I don't know about that...

Takumi: Listen, I won't force your hand. But I think you shouldn't dismiss the idea.

Shigure: Fine, OK... We can give this exhibition a shot.

Takumi: It's decided then. Excellent! I'm going to hurry up and get started. First off I'll head into town. Hopefully I can recruit a few helpers. See you later, Shigure!

(Takumi leaves)

Shigure: Good-bye, Father.

Shigure: Good afternoon, Father...

Takumi: Shigure, how are you today? Did you need something?

Shigure: No, not exactly. You've done so much to make this show a possibility. I just wanted to say thanks.

Takumi: Don't be silly. I'm barely doing anything. So many folks volunteered, it's been a breeze! Everyone is excited to see your work. Truth be told, I think a lot of people have long been curious about your paintings.

Shigure: O-oh, I had no idea...

Takumi: Shigure, are you nervous?

Shigure: Well of course. But the truth is, I'm worried about my newest piece. It just isn't coming together.

Takumi: Oh? The one you're painting just for the exhibition? While I would love to see your new work, we don't have much time left to prepare. Can't you hold off on completing it?

Shigure: No, that's not an option. I have to finish it. Everyone has devoted so much energy to the show. This final piece ties all the others together. I have to keep working on it.

Takumi: I understand. But please, don't overdo it. If you make yourself ill, this will all be for nothing.

Shigure: You're right. Thank you, Father. If you'll excuse me, I should get back to my work.

Takumi: Of course. Good luck.

(Shigure leaves)

Takumi: I've never seen my son so focused. What is this mystery painting of his?

Takumi: The day has arrived. It's finally time for Shigure's big exhibition. I better take a look inside the tent. Wow... My goodness, look at all these people! From what I've overheard, everyone seems to be enjoying his art. But where is Shigure? I haven't seen him anywhere...

Shigure: *pant*...*pant*...

Takumi: Sh-Shigure?! Are you just now arriving? The exhibition is well under way. Who shows up late for their own show?!

Shigure: I apologize, Father. It took me all night, but I managed to finish my final painting.

Takumi: Whaaat?! You stayed up all night just to complete this canvas?

Shigure: Y-yes, I did...

Takumi: Why would you do something so careless? There are dozens of finished works here. Look how happy everyone is! If you'd made yourself sick, we would have been forced to cancel the exhibition. Then no one would have been able to enjoy all of your work. Why was having one more painting so important?

Shigure: I promised myself that I would complete it, no matter what. I created this because I'm thankful for everything you've done for me, Father.

Takumi: What?! Th-this painting... It's of your mother and I?

Shigure: Yes, it is...

Takumi: This is what you've been agonizing over?

Shigure: My love for you two is beyond measure. You brought me into this world. Without you, I never would have been able to paint. So I wanted to pour those feelings of gratitude into this portrait.

Takumi: I don't know what to say... Shigure, thank you.

Shigure: F-Father, it hurts when you hug me so tightly, hahaha.

Takumi: You're an unbelievably thoughtful son. I'm very proud of you.

Shigure: I'm proud to be your son.

Takumi: Now then... We can't waste any time. This painting must go on display so everyone can enjoy it!

Shigure: O-OK... But it's a little embarrassing.

Takumi: Don't say that. It's probably the finest work that you've done. Wouldn't you agree, Shigure?

Shigure: It might just be, Father.
