Subaki: Working on your art again, Shigure? You certainly have a passion for it, don't you?

Shigure: Hello, Father. Sorry, I didn't hear you come in. I know this is no time for painting, since we're at war and all...

Subaki: Son, don't misunderstand my intentions. I'm not here to criticize you. In fact, I think you should devote more of your time to painting! If things were different, I bet you would be a world-famous artist already.

Shigure: I don't know about that, but it's very kind of you to say.

Subaki: Don't be so modest. If I were you, I'd want to show off my talents. If only there was a way to let everyone enjoy your work.

Shigure: What do you mean?

Subaki: Hmmm, let me think... Wait! I know just what to do! Why don't we hold a solo exhibition for you?

Shigure: A-an exhibition? I don't know, Father. And besides, our troops are on the advance. The setup alone would be way more work than it's worth.

Subaki: This doesn't have to be some grand event. All we need to do is rent a tent and announce it to the troops and villagers.

Shigure: B-but it seems so vain to reserve a whole tent just for my personal use.

Subaki: No, that's the beauty of it. This would be for everyone! Art has the power to grant people peace of mind, even during difficult times.

Shigure: I'm not sure...

Subaki: I'm not going to force you, Son. What do you want to do?

Shigure: Well...OK. Maybe we should give the exhibition a try. But I have to admit that I'm a little scared about the idea.

Subaki: Don't worry. This is going to be great! We should get started straightaway. I'll go try and recruit some people to help!

(Subaki leaves)

Shigure: Thank you, Father.

Shigure: Hello, Father...

Subaki: Is something wrong, Shigure? You're acting a bit mousy today.

Shigure: Well... You've done so much to make this exhibition a possibility. I just wanted to say thanks.

Subaki: Now, Son, I really haven't done that much. The townsfolk deserve most of the credit. They've been a huge help. Everyone is eager to see your paintings. Honestly, you're the one who made this all possible.

Shigure: If you say so...

Subaki: Are you feeling nervous?

Shigure: Sure, of course. But I'm mostly concerned about my newest painting. It's just not coming together like I hoped it would.

Subaki: Oh? Is this the one you're making just for the exhibition? While I appreciate your desire to make new art, time is running short. You might want to wait and finish up that piece after the show.

Shigure: I promised myself that I would get it done. So many people have come together to give me this opportunity. And the final piece really unites the show. I have to keep going.

Subaki: Sure, I understand. Do whatever makes you happy. But please, don't push yourself too hard. If you get sick, this will all have been for nothing.

Shigure: You're right, of course. I appreciate the concern, but I have to get back to the easel.

Subaki: Good luck!

(Shigure leaves)

Subaki: What's gotten into him? He seems so fired up. I wonder why this painting is so important.

Subaki: The big day is finally here! It's time for Shigure's exhibition! I wonder how things are going in the tent... Wow... Amazing! Look at all these people. From what I've overheard, his art seems to be quite popular with everyone. I'm so glad we decided to throw this event. It's nice to see a room filled with smiling faces for a change. But wait... Where's Shigure? I haven't seen him anywhere.

Shigure: *pant*...*pant*...

Subaki: Sh-Shigure?! Why are you out of breath? Wait. Did you just get here? How could you be late for your own exhibition?!

Shigure: I'm very sorry, Father. I got here as soon as I could. I had to stay up all night to put the finishing touches on this painting.

Subaki: You did all that just for one painting?

Shigure: Y-yes, I did...

Subaki: What if you had gotten sick? We would have had to cancel the show! Think of how disappointed everyone would have been. They all worked so hard to help. You already have tons of work on display. Why didn't you stop and think?

Shigure: I promised myself that I would complete it, no matter what. I made this because I'm thankful for everything you've done for me, Father.

Subaki: Wh-what...?! Th-this painting... It's me...and your mother?

Shigure: Yes, it is...

Subaki: So this is what you've been working on so tirelessly?

Shigure: My love for you two is beyond measure. You brought me into this world. Without you, I never would have been able to paint. So I wanted to pour those feelings of gratitude into this portrait.

Subaki: Shigure, I don't know what to say. It's just wonderful. Thank you, Son!

Shigure: F-Father, I can't breathe when you hug me so tightly...hahaha.

Subaki: You make me very proud, Son.

Shigure: That's kind of you to say. I'm just lucky to have such a great father.

Subaki: Shigure! Quickly! We can't waste any more time. This painting has to go on display!

Shigure: O-OK... But it's a little bit embarrassing.

Subaki: Why? Because it depicts your beloved parents? Don't be silly. We have to find the perfect spot to hang it up. Right, Shigure?

Shigure: You bet. Let's go, Father!
