Kana(M): Nina! Nina! Hey, Nina!

Nina: Whoa there, kiddo! You've sure got energy today. What's up?

Kana(M): I wanted to ask you some questions about you!

Nina: Huh? What about me? Er...your questions don't have to do with my...ah...people-watching stuff, do they? Oh, man, I am not the one who should be explaining this... Where are your parents?

Kana(M): Huh? No, I just heard you're one of those noble thief people! You steal from the rich to give to the poor and all that stuff, right? That's so awesome!

Nina: Oh! Yeah, that's me! Teehee!

Kana(M): But...my papa and mama told me it was wrong to steal... Is that true?

Nina: Well, see...the thing is...

Kana(M): I'm sorry! You don't have to answer if you don't want to.

Nina: No, no, it's OK. You're right—stealing is wrong. But the world's a complex place. Some things are less wrong than others. Sometimes just doing things that look right will make the world worse. You know?

Kana(M): Um...I guess so...

Nina: In this world, doing the right thing doesn't always mean you'll be rewarded. In an imperfect world like this, you have to make imperfect decisions. Sometimes stealing is the best way you can help people.

Kana(M): OK, I think I understand. So...being a noble thief is the best way to help people?

Nina: Well, not always, and not for everyone. Different people have different talents. Stealing, however, is mine! And I DO think I've helped lots of people with it. Many more than I might have otherwise.

Kana(M): Hmm. So when you help people, do they give you stuff?

Nina: Sorta! But maybe I'll tell you about that stuff some other time. For now, I've got to go. I think I just spotted a blacksmith and his apprentice! Later!

(Nina leaves)

Kana(M): OK! Bye-bye, Nina! Wow, she can run so fast! Heehee. What a funny lady.

Kana(M): Nina! Ooh, what're those?

Nina: These, my dear, are letters! Letters from all of the people I've helped with my skills.

Kana(M): Wow! But you've got so many! Can I read some of them? "Now I can live with my family again. Thank you so much!" What did you do for this one?

Nina: Ah. That was from a man who'd been forced to leave his family by his employer. There was no other work around, and he didn't have the money to move them. So I nicked a few trinkets off a corrupt duke to set them up with a new home!

Kana(M): They couldn't live together...because of money?

Nina: Yes. And we both know how painful it is to be separated from your family, right? They didn't have any other way to fix it or make it better, either. He would have died before he saved up enough money. And that's why noble thieves like myself exist. To right these wrongs.

Kana(M): Oh, OK. I think I got it now!

Nina: But, I don't want you misunderstanding, Kana. It's still stealing. It's still wrong. It's just that sometimes doing nothing is more wrong. You know?

Kana(M): Mhm! You know, you're really amazing, Nina!

Nina: Aww. Thanks, Kana! I wish everyone felt that way... I know my father certainly doesn't...

Kana(M): Huh?

Nina: He doesn't approve of me. Even though he was a thief himself, once. Ever since I was little, he's been telling me I should never steal, no matter what. I know why he does...but what he says and what he does are two different things. I couldn't have respect for someone like that. We...fought over it. A lot.

Kana(M): Hmm...well... I think as long as people are grateful for what you do, then it's a good thing!

Nina: Teehee. You're the best, Kana. Thanks!

Kana(M): No problem!

Kana(M): Hey, Nina. Can I talk to you about something?

Nina: Sure, Kana. What is it?

Kana(M): Well, it's just...I was thinking about our conversation the other day. You said that you didn't have respect for people like your papa. And...it made me really sad to hear that...

Nina: Ah, yeah...I guess I can see why it would upset you. You get along so well with your parents, it must have been shocking to hear. But...you don't need to worry or anything. It's not at all as bad as it used to be. We just don't see eye to eye. That's all.

Kana(M): I dunno...

Nina: Huh?

Kana(M): I mean, I know you don't see eye to eye with him. But I'm not sure you disliked him as much as you think you did. And you might even have more in common than you think!

Nina: Wh-what do you mean?

Kana(M): You said before you became a noble thief 'cause that's where your talents lay. But it's not like you were born a thief. You probably became one to be like your dad! I think, deep down, you really do respect him a lot, and you want his approval. Which is why you argue so much over your noble thief stuff! After all, if you really didn't care, you wouldn't argue, right?

Nina: Kana... You're very perceptive for a kid your age, you know that? *sigh* But when you're right, you're right. Thanks, Kana. You've given me a lot to think about. I'm not sure how easy it'll be to repair our relationship... But you've shown me that the seeds are already there. Thank you.

Kana(M): Mhm! Glad I could help!

Kana(M): Nina! Nina! I got something for you!

Nina: Hm? What is it?

Kana(M): Here, here, hold out your hands! Ta-da!

Nina: A book? What's it about?

Kana(M): Oh, y'know, it's just about the lives of all the most famous noble thieves in history! I saw it in town and thought you might want to give it to your dad! I figured if he read it, he might start to understand your point of view better.

Nina: Kana...this is... Thank you. Thank you so much. And, um...please...never change.

Kana(M): Huh? What do you mean?

Nina: I was just thinking...you're just a kid now, but you're going to grow up soon. And I wonder if you'll be the same person as you are now. It makes me sad. Because the best things about you are your kindness, and your honesty... And those are always the first things to go.

Kana(M): Don't worry, Nina! I promise I won't change!

Nina: It's not that simple... You'll see, I guess. Just give it time.

Kana(M): Nope! Not gonna change! Not me! A Kana-promise is unbreakable! But...um...if I did change... We could still be friends, right? Because you're my best friend, Nina...and I don't want to lose you.

Nina: Huh? Oh, Kana, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to upset you! Of course we'll still be friends! No matter what! That's a Nina-promise! You're my best friend too. I wouldn't let you get away that easy! Heehee.

Kana(M): Good to know! Let's stick together forever, Nina.

Nina: Sounds good to me!
