Mercenaries can be hired each chapter for money, and they will remain hired for all missions in the chapter. For most mercenaries, their hiring price increases as their level increases, but they can be hired for half-price after completing the chapter's compulsory mission. After the end of Chapter 13, mercenaries can no longer be hired; they will only remain available if they were permanently recruited.

Guest characters are only available for the chapter where they initially appear unless their recruitment criteria are met. Izerna and Enid are treated as guest characters in their respective first appearances, but are automatically recruited afterwards.

Chapter 9 - City Permanently (Method 1): Chapter 7 or later, when his Happiness is 12 or higher.
- Permanently (Method 2): Defeat Chaos in "The Three Priests" and view the event with Leticia, then raise his Happiness to 5 or higher and have him enter the church in "Rescue Mission"; he will leave, then rejoin permanently after completing "Breaking Bridges"
Axel Chapter 1 - City Mercenary: [Abbey] After completing "A Reason to Fight".
Chapter 9 - "Breaking Bridges" Permanently: Raise his Happiness to 5 or higher, then have him visit the house on the left side of the map in "Breaking Bridges."
Sylvia Chapter 1 - City Mercenary: [Mercenary Guild] After completing "Cruel Brothers."
- Permanently: After completing "Hero of the Seas."
To unlock this mission: after completing "Hold the Fort," view the city event "Bounty Hunter"; then, after raising Sylvis's Happiness to 12+ and her Level to 10+, view the city event "Her Circumstances."
- Constraints: Unavailable for "Hold the Fort" (during which she appears as an NPC instead).
Ruby Chapter 1 - "Fledgling Knights" Guest: Automatic, from turn 1
Mercenary: [Mercenary Guild] After completing "Fledgling Knights."
- Permanently: After completing "A Knight's Pride."
To unlock this mission: Raise Ruby's Happiness to 11+ and her Level to 10+, and keep Clifford alive.
Arthur Chapter 1 - "Fledgling Knights" Guest: Automatic, from turn 1
Mercenary: [Mercenary Guild] After completing "Fledgling Knights."
- Permanently (Method 1): View the city event "Dishonor" after "Fledgling Knights," raise his Happiness to 10+, then view the city event "Exile."
Permanently (Method 2): Automatic, if his Happiness is 1+ at the start of Chapter 8.
Czene Chapter 2 - "Bandit Suppression" Guest: Automatic, from turn 1
- Permanently: Talk to her with Reese in "Bandit Suppression", then complete the optional mission "In Pursuit of Thieves"
Kramer Chapter 2 - "Bandit Suppression" Mercenary: Automatic, from turn 1, then appears in the Mercenary Guild
- Permanently: After completing "Stolen Sword" and giving him the sword Balmung.
To unlock this mission: Talk to him with Reese in "Bandit Suppression," then raise Kramer's Happiness to 9+ and his Level to 10+.
Faye Chapter 2 - "Bandit Suppression" Mercenary: Automatic, from turn 1, then appears in the Mercenary Guild
- Permanently: After completing "The Altar of Raze," she will leave and rejoin permanently at the start of the next chapter.
To unlock this mission: After raising Faye's Happiness to 6+, view the city event "Warrior of Izmil." Then, raise Faye's Happiness to 12+ and her Level to 10+ while keeping Faramir alive. (After completing "The Holy Knight," the 12+ Happiness requirement is no longer needed.)
Derrick Chapter 2 - City Mercenary: [Mercenary Guild] After allowing him to escape in "Combat Training." Only appears for non-primary missions.
- Permanently: After Enid has class changed and his Happiness is 3 or higher
Clifford Chapter 3 - City Mercenary: [Pub] After commencing Chapter 3.
- Permanently: After Ruby's promotion, view the city event "Fake Contest." City events relating to Clifford and Ruby, such as "Father and Daughter," must also have been viewed.
Faramir Chapter 3 - City Mercenary: [Mercenary Guild] After completing "The Three Priests." Faye must also be hired.
- Permanently: After Faye has been permanently recruited and Faramir's Happiness is raised to 3+.
Esteban Chapter 3 - "The Three Priests" Mercenary: [Mercenary Guild] Talk to him with Christine in "The Three Priests" (appears on turn 20).
- Permanently: View the city event "Arina's Wish", have Esteban participate in "Frontline Town" without being captured or killed, have Esteban fight Sophie in "Breaking Bridges," and raise Esteban's Happiness to 5+.
Aegina Chapter 3 - "Maiden and Mercenary" Guest: Automatic, from turn 1
Permanently: After completing "Maiden and Mercenary."
Sherpa Chapter 3 - "Maiden and Mercenary" Guest: Automatic, from turn 1
Mercenary: [Mercenary Guild] After completing "Maiden and Mercenary."
Chapter 8 - "The Wooden Cavalry" Permanently: Before Chapter 8, view the city event "Letter." Then, have him talk with Kay in "The Wooden Cavalry," then raise his Happiness to 1+.
Saphira Chapter 4 - City Mercenary: [Abbey] After commencing Chapter 4.
Chapter 12 - "The Heathen God" Permanently: After completing "The Heathen God," if her Happiness is 1+.
- Constraints: Unavailable for "The Heathen God" (during which she appears as an NPC instead).
Olwen Chapter 4 - City Mercenary: [Veria Shrine] After commencing Chapter 4, if Grimm reached the temple in "The Three Priests."
Chapter 12 - "The Heathen God" Permanently: After completing "The Heathen God," if his Happiness is 5+.
- Constraints: Before being permanently recruited, at the end of Turn 20 on any map, he turns into a Raze Priest and becomes an enemy for the duration of the map; in "The Heathen God", if his Happiness is 5 or higher, this instead occurs at the end of Turn 12.
Daoud Chapter 4 - "Covering the Retreat" Guest: Automatic, from turn 1
- Permanently: After completing "Covering the Retreat," if all allied soldiers survived and escaped.
Larentia Chapter 4 - "Covering the Retreat" Mercenary: [Dungeon] In "Covering the Retreat," talk to her with Reese, or let her talk to him (she appears on turn 13 as an enemy).
- Permanently: After Reese's promotion, if it takes place in Chapters 7 to 10.
Sedy Chapter 4 - "Hero of the Streets" Guest: Automatic, from turn 1
Mercenary: [Streets] After completing "Hero of the Streets."
- Permanently: After he has been hired for a cumulative total of 5000 denarii or more.
Marcel Chapter 5 - "Hold the Fort" Guest: Talk to him with Reese in "Hold the Fort." (Appears from turn 1 as an NPC.)
- Permanently: After completing "Hold the Fort," if all civilians survived.
Enid Chapter 6 - "Frontline Town" Automatic, from turn 1
Perceval Chapter 6 - "Frontline Town" Guest: Talk to him with Enid in "Frontline Town." (Appears turn 6 as an NPC).
Mercenary: [Mercenary Guild] After completing "Frontline Town," if recruited as a guest.
Chapter 12 - "The Heathen God" Permanently: Have him fight the enemy that has captured Izerna; if his Happiness is 2 or higher, he will leave, then join at the end of the mission
Burroughs Chapter 9 - "Breaking Bridges" From the start, if he and all other allied Ballisticians survived in Chapter 8
Alvina Chapter 10 - "The Paladin Alvina" Automatically after completing mission
Paramythis Chapter 12 - "The Heathen God" Guest: Automatic, from turn 1
- Permanently: After completing mission, if Saphira joined
Lanette Chapter 15 - "Legend" Automatic, from turn 1

Unit Types

Units can begin as Guests, Mercenaries, or Permanently-recruited characters:

  • Characters that begin as Guests have additional requirements (which usually must be met in the chapter they are guests in) in order to become Mercenaries or Permanent characters.
  • Mercenaries must be re-hired for each chapter (which can last up to four missions), which requires paying them a hiring fee. This hiring fee is halved if the chapter's primary mission has already been completed. Mercenaries cannot be hired after beginning Chapter 13.
  • Permanent units are fully recruited and can be freely used (save for rare restrictions).
