Units can begin as Guests, Mercenaries, or Permanently-recruited characters:

  • Characters that begin as Guests have additional requirements (which usually must be met in the chapter they are guests in) in order to become Mercenaries or Permanent characters.
  • Mercenaries must be re-hired for each chapter (which can last up to four missions), which requires paying them a hiring fee. This hiring fee is halved if the chapter's primary mission has already been completed. Mercenaries cannot be hired after starting Chapter 13.
  • Permanent units are fully recruited and can be freely used.

There are also a handful of conditions that restrict when a unit can be used; see the Restrictions section for details.

Burroughs Chapter 9 - "Breaking Bridges" Permanently: Automatic, from turn 1, if Burroughs and all other NPC ballisticians successfully escaped in Map 8: "The Wooden Cavalry."
Alvina Chapter 10 Permanently: After completing Map 10: "The Holy Knight."
Paramythis Chapter 12 - "The Heathen God" Guest: Automatic, from turn 1.
- Permanently: After completing Map 12-1: "The Heathen God", if Saphira is alive and has been permanently recruited.

These events must take place prior to the end of Chapter 13.

Restrictions

  • Reese: Unavailable for non-primary missions, except for Maps 11-1: "Island of Exile" and 12-1: "The Heathen God."
  • Ward: Unavailable for non-primary missions, except for Maps 11-1: "Island of Exile" and 12-1: "The Heathen God."
  • Izerna: Unavailable for Map 12-1: "The Heathen God," during which she appears as an NPC instead.
  • Volo: If the conditions for his permanent recruitment (method 2) have been met, he will be unavailable from when he leaves on Map 7: "Rescue Mission" until the completion of Map 9: "Breaking Bridges."
  • Sylvis: Unavailable for Map 5: "Hold the Fort," during which she appears as an NPC instead.
  • Faye: Unavailable from the completion of Map X-4: "The Altar of Raze" until the beginning of the next chapter.
  • Derrick: Unavailable for primary missions.
  • Faramir: Cannot be hired as a mercenary unless Faye has been hired or permanently recruited.
  • Saphira: Unavailable for Map 12-1: "The Heathen God," during which she appears as an NPC instead.
  • Owen: Until he is permanently recruited, at the end of turn 20 on any map, he will Convert to a Raze Monk and become an enemy until the end of the map.
    • In Map 12-1: "The Heathen God", if his Happiness is 5+, this instead occurs at the end of turn 12.
  • Perceval: If the conditions for his permanent recruitment have been met, he will be unavailable from when he leaves in Map 12-1: "The Heathen God" until the completion of "The Heathen God."

  • After hiring a mercenary, he/she remains hired for all missions in that chapter.
