Azama: Oh, hello, Shigure. I see you're painting again, eh?

Shigure: Father, I'm sorry. I didn't hear you come in. I know this is no time for painting. We're at war, after all.

Azama: Why are you so self-conscious? It's true, these are dire times. Perhaps it's just my love speaking, but I think you're a very talented artist. So if you prefer to paint over fighting, I certainly won't stop you.

Shigure: Hahaha, thank you, Father. I'm a little embarrassed, but I appreciate your support.

Azama: Always so modest. Your gift makes most people look like incompetent fools. I wonder if there is a way to show off your marvelous skill?

Shigure: Father, what do you mean?

Azama: Hmm... Heheh, I know just what to do. Shigure, you must hold an exhibition!

Shigure: M-me? An exhibition? I could never do such a thing! With our troops on the march, the setup alone would be too much trouble.

Azama: You must think bigger. Anything is possible if you have the will to see it through. It's simple. We just have to reserve a spacious tent and announce it to the troops and villagers.

Shigure: B-but using a whole tent just for my show feels wrong...

Azama: That's precisely why it must be meaningful for everyone, yes? Now, what if I were to say that your art brought peace of mind to our soldiers. They need a reprieve from the incessant onslaught of war. It's true, isn't it? These paintings of yours hold that power.

Shigure: Father, I'm not sure...

Azama: You may not be keen on the idea, but I think your paintings should be seen. I won't force your hand here, but please, think about it.

Shigure: Fine... I-I want to give it a try. The solo exhibition. But I must admit, it makes me anxious.

Azama: I'm glad you changed your mind. We should get started straightaway. First I'll round up as many people to help as I can. I'm sure there will be plenty!

(Azama leaves)

Shigure: Thank you, Father.

Shigure: Father...

Azama: Ah, there you are, Shigure. Is everything OK?

Shigure: Yes, I'm fine. Listen, I've been thinking. You've done so much to make this exhibition a reality. I wanted to give you my humblest thanks.

Azama: Oh, Son, I haven't done that much. Everyone has been eager to help. Probably because they can't wait to see the show! Well, there may have been one or two uncooperative people... But after talking to them, they instantly changed their minds.

Shigure: O-oh, I see...

Azama: Shigure... Are you feeling nervous?

Shigure: Sure, a bit. But the truth is, I'm not very proud of my newest painting.

Azama: The one you're making just for this occasion, yes? The exhibition is coming up quickly. I can't believe you're still working on it! Perhaps you should stop working on that and focus on the art you already have done. Don't overwork yourself.

Shigure: No... I must complete this piece. Everyone has worked so very hard to give me this opportunity... It's important to show them how much I appreciate it.

Azama: I understand. But it would be foolish to work so hard that you get ill. I won't keep you from painting... But just take care of yourself, understand?

Shigure: Of course. Thank you, Father. I must get back to the easel. So long.

Azama: Very well...

(Shigure leaves)

Azama: That child is equal parts confident and stubborn. I wonder what he's painting...

A Support

Azama: Shigure's solo exhibition has finally begun! I'd better see how things are going... I hope it's crowded... Hoho! It's a roaring success! People are swarming like bees. From the chatter of the crowd, everyone loves the paintings. It certainly seems to be worth all of our hard work. This show is bound to make Shigure more popular around town. Speaking of, where is he?

Shigure: *pant*...*pant*... I made it!

Azama: Shigure? Why are you panting? Did something happen? Please don't tell me you just arrived.

Shigure: I'm very sorry, Father. I've been up all night putting the finishing touches on the painting.

Azama: What painting? The final one for the exhibition?

Shigure: Y-yes, that's the one...

Azama: Son, why did you go to such great lengths? I just don't understand you at all. It was only one piece after all, and you already have so much wonderful work here! Why did you do something so foolish?

Shigure: I-I just wanted to finish up the painting, no matter what. I made it to show you my gratitude, Father.

Azama: You what?! I-is this...your mother and me?

Shigure: Yes, it's a portrait of the two of you. I felt very inspired and couldn't put down the brush.

Azama: Th-this is what you spent all your time working on?

Shigure: Yes. I respect and love you both so much. If not for you two, I would never have been born into this world... None of these paintings would exist. So I tried to pour my feelings of gratitude into the artwork.

Azama: Shigure, I...don't know what to say... The words are escaping me... You're a very thoughtful son. Thank you, Shigure...

Shigure: F-Father... You're hugging me so tightly it hurts.

Azama: Shigure, it's a miracle that I could have such a sweet son. You make me so proud!

Shigure: I'm very proud to be your son, Father.

Azama: I could gaze at this painting forever. But that would be terribly wasteful. We have to show it to everyone!

Shigure: O-OK... It's a little embarrassing, though...

Azama: Nonsense! This is the finest painting in the whole exhibition! We have to find the perfect spot to put it on display!

Shigure: Whatever you say, Father!
